Vital Options and CancerConsultants To Develop Cancer Clinical Trials Resource

LOS ANGELES—July 19, 2000—Vital Options® TeleSupport® Cancer Network has entered into a collaborative arrangement with CancerConsultants.com™ to develop a website-based clinical trials resource for cancer patients at www.vitaloptions.org.

Vital Options, a national not-for-profit cancer communications, support and advocacy organization headquartered in Sherman Oaks, Calif., produces the nationally syndicated radio talk show about cancer, The Group Room®, in association with Premiere Radio Networks.

CancerConsultants.com, a leading provider of patient-oriented cancer treatment information on the Internet, was formed to help cancer patients and their families make more informed decisions about treatment options.

According to Selma R. Schimmel, president and founder of Vital Option and host of The Group Room, this alliance will help Vital Options further its mission of providing the best, most up-to-date information about cancer and the various issues related to the cancer experience.

“Patients will be able to search for clinical trials applicable to their cancer on a local or national basis by accessing www.eCancerTrials.com™,” she said. “Listeners of The Group Room and visitors to Vital Options’ homepage will be able to get reliable information about available trials at this link or through the National Cancer Institute’s PDQ® (www.cancernet.nci.nih.gov) or CenterWatch (www.centerwatch.com).”

“CancerConsultants.com’s partnership with Vital Options will also help us realize our mission by reaching more patients and families through the resources of Vital Options and The Group Room,” said Dr. Charles H. Weaver, a medical oncologist who founded CancerConsultants.com and serves as its chief executive officer and managing editor.

“As physicians have less and less time to help cancer patients learn about their disease and treatment options, patients have turned to other sources to help them become empowered consumers of cancer services. Our site will also provide information about upcoming topics and programs on The Group Room,” added Weaver.

In addition to www.eCancerTrials.com, CancerConsultants.com also provides comprehensive cancer treatment information via www.411Cancer.comand access to specialized treatment programs via www.911Cancer.com. As a special service to listeners of The Group Room, CancerConsultants.com will conduct individualized searches upon request.

The Group Room—the world’s largest cancer support group—airs live every Sunday from 4-6 p.m. ET (1-3 p.m. PT) in selected cities throughout the United States, including New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Memphis and Tampa, and reaches more than 300,000 listeners a week. It is also simulcast worldwide via the Internet (www.vitaloptions.org). All phone calls to The Group Room are screened by a licensed oncology social worker. Callers can enter discussions by dialing 1-800-GRP-ROOM (1-800-477-7666).

During the week, individuals can reach Vital Options at 818-508-5657 for support or to receive more information about cancer resources or stations carrying the broadcast.

The Group Room is supported through educational grants from founding sponsor Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. and corporate sponsors Ortho Biotech Inc., Pharmacia Oncology and Genentech BioOncology Inc.
