Women&Cancer Magazine Now Published in Japan

July 2, 2008—Women&Cancerannounces publication in Japan

This past spring Women&Cancer was released in Japan under the title PiNK by the publisher Paradigm. Because there is very little information available to women in Japan regarding breast cancer, the death rate from the disease among Japanese women is needlessly elevated, particularly considering the high cure for breast cancer that is detected early. By making readily available more information about breast and other cancers affecting women, PiNK is poised to be a revolutionary educational tool for Japanese women. PiNK aims to raise public awareness of women’s cancer issues in Japan, where not even basic screening is covered by National Health Insurance; even though breast cancer surpassed stomach cancer in 1995 as the number one cancer killer of Japanese women between the ages of 35 and 55, Japanese National Health Insurance does not cover the cost of annual screening.

Distribution of PiNK is growing steadily, with a goal of 50,000 copies by the end of 2008. Plans moving forward also include more content focused on Japanese women and national issues. For example, an upcoming article will profile the company New Balance Japan and their policy that requires and pays for all female staff to have an annual mammogram. Future issues also include interviews with a Japanese comedienne and two singers (all breast cancer survivors).

PiNK’s publisher, Paradigm, works in conjunction with the Run for the Cure Foundation, which was established five years ago with the mission to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease in Japan through education and early detection. Only 5% to 10% of women in Japan age 40 and over have annual mammograms. To date, the Run for the Cure Foundation has purchased and donated eight mammogram machines and funded 4,000 mammograms for medically underserved women living in rural areas of Japan.
